The 72nd day – No greater love than this …

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. — John 15:13

Differ from English, there are four kinds of ‘Love’ in Greek languages. According to C.S. Lewis, they are
1) Storge – Affection: it is fondness through familiarity. It is described as the most natural, emotive, and widely diffused of loves.

2) Philia – Friendship: the love between family and friends. Friendship is a weak bond existing between people who share common interest or activity.

3) Eros – Romance: the love in the sense of ‘being in love’. This is distinct from sexuality, which Lewis calls Venus. It is Venus that desires the sexual aspect of a relationship, while Eros longs for the emotional connection with the other person.

4) Agape – Unconditional Love: the love that brings forth caring regardless of circumstance. Lewis recognizes this as the greatest of loves, and sees it as a specifically Christian virtue. The chapter on the subject focuses on the need of subordinating the natural loves to the love of God, who is full of charitable love.

It is the fourth word used in John 15:13, Jesus teaches his disciples that there is no greater love than the Agape love demonstrated by someone who sacrifices his life so that his friends might be saved. Jesus, himself has demonstrated this love by dying on the cross for us.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. — John 3:16
