The 32nd day – a little step makes big difference
The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord. the god of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. — 1 Kings 11:9
Today’s verse reveals a critical moment in Israel’s history – Solomon’s heart has turned away from God, and God, the father was upset. Solomon has fallen for the three main idols: 1. POWER 2. SEX 3. MONEY. It was sad because God himself has appeared solomon to TWICE. The divine punishment for Solomon’s sin is that there will be a tearing of his kingdom, as you can seen from God’s words in verse 11 – 13. And this is exactly what happens in the history.
11 So the LORD said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.12 Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

From today’s verse, here are a few understandings:
1) Solomon didn’t turned away from God all at once or in a brief moment. His spiritual coldness started with a minor departure from God’s commands. Over the years, that little sin grew until it resulted in Solomon’s downfall. A little sin can be the first step in turning away from God. Watch out for small sins we excuse.
2) A few days ago, we went through the story that King Solomon asked for Wisdom when God promised to give whatever he asked. Reading today’s verse, however, it makes me think whether wisdom is the best thing that King Solomon could have asked? What do you think? (Maybe, if I were Solomon, I would asked to be closed to God always – intimate relationship with God – This means to be under his mercy, goodness, guidance, protection, blessings … everything good that you could possibly receive …
3) Three major things caused Solomon’s downfall are 1. POWER 2. SEX 3. MONEY, I believe many agreed that these are also the main reasons cause many people to stumble today. How could we win this battle against these big big temptations even though the wisest king in the history, Solomon, has failed? Yes, we can win the battle! because the difference is:
” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. ” — John 3:16
Jesus has come and died for our sins, he promised to live within us if we are willing to receive him. That means we are not fighting this battle on our own, Jesus is on our side:
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” — Romans 8:37
Be encouraged, God is fighting our battle and Jesus has won!
